Kelvin Gastelum, Efrain Escudero named head coaches of 'TUF: Latin America 2

The second season of “The Ultimate Fighter: Latin America” has its coaches, and they’re no strangers to the UFC’s long-running reality show.

“TUF 17″ winner Kelvin Gastelum (10-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) and “TUF 8″ champion Efrain Escudero (23-9 MMA, 4-5 UFC) will head their respective squads on the show, which begins filming later this month, officials today announced.

The show will forego the usual post-series coach-vs.-coach fight since the fighters are two weight classes apart.

“TUF: Latin America 2″ debuts in August, and Mexico will host the show’s live finale later this year. The show is televised in Mexico and throughout Latin America, and it streams on UFC Fight Pass in North America.

“TUF: Latin America 2″ features lightweight and welterweight hopefuls from Mexico and other Latin American countries, though the cast hasn’t yet been revealed.

Gastelum, who’s of Mexican descent, and Mexican-born Escudero assume the coaching rules that heavyweight champion Cain Velasquez and Fabricio Werdum handled in the first season, which aired in 2014. Yair Rodriguez was the show’s featherweight winner, and Alejandro Perez was the bantamweight champ.

Gastelum won “TUF 17″ in 2013 after earning a split-decision victory over Uriah Hall in the show’s tournament final. It kicked off an impressive 5-0 start to the 23-year-old’s UFC career, which helped earn him his current No. 14 spot in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie welterweight rankings. However, prior to a split-decision defeat to Tyron Woodley in his most recent bout, Gastelum badly missed weight for the fight (weighing 180 pounds) and has been forced to move up to middleweight.

Meanwhile, Escudero, who’s currently in his third stint with the UFC, won “TUF 8″ in 2008 after earning a decision victory over Phillipe Nover in the tourney final. The 29-year-old lightweight and nine-year pro recently scored a decision victory over Rodrigo Lima this past month. He’s now 5-2 over his past seven fights.

FEDOR EMELIANENKO:

Ronda Rousey.

MARK MUNOZ

UFC Fight Night 66 ще се проведе на MS Mall of Asia Arena в Пасай.

Roan Carneiro.

UFC 185's Joseph Duffy focused on UFC debut, new camp – not Conor McGregor

For those feeling long-since saturated by the sight and sound of all things Conor McGregor, they are likely to find a kindred spirit in Irish lightweight Joseph Duffy.

Duffy (12-1 MMA, 0-0 UFC), a UFC newcomer, makes his promotional debut against lightweight Jake Lindsey (9-2 MMA, 0-2 UFC) at UFC 185 in Dallas on Saturday night.

Owing to the fact that he is the last man to claim a victory over McGregor, the UFC featherweight division’s No 1 contender, Duffy has been ceaselessly inundated with questions about their bout at Cage Warriors 39 in November 2010, when he submitted McGregor via arm-triangle choke just 38 seconds into the first round.

On the verge of the most important fight of his career, Duffy wishes to focus on more-pressing matters.

“All this other stuff surrounding the fight is not important,” he told MMAjunkie. “I have got an opponent in Jake Lindsey on Saturday night, so I’m just going to concentrate on him. I’m going to take it one step at a time.

“Conor is obviously further ahead than me in his UFC career. I’m just going to go at my own pace.”

Incidentally, until Gleison Tibau commandeered the accolade at UFC Fight 69 in Boston on Jan. 18, Duffy was also the last man to better Norman Parke, whom he also submitted in the first round, just seven months prior to his victory over McGregor.

However, the unassuming 27-year-old is far more eager to speak about his recent experiences at the famed Tristar Gym in Montreal, where he has been training since Feb. 7 for his UFC Fight Pass-streamed preliminary-card showdown with Lindsey.

Having considered other camps, Duffy was ultimately swayed toward Tristar because he perceived a refreshing combination of intelligence and humility within that environment.

“I just think that the mentality in Tristar is second to none,” he said. “All their fighters are quite crafty; they fight sensibly, use their brain, and there’s not really any egos, so I just thought I’d fit in well. They’ve obviously got top coaches, and I just thought it was a great opportunity to learn.

“They’ve always produced top-notch fighters, and they’ve all been quite humble and modest. I just felt it was a place I’d thrive best in. I was always a massive fan of Georges St. Pierre and loved the way he fought, so I just thought, why not try the place where he was produced?”

Indeed, Duffy had rubbed shoulders with the former welterweight champion before, when he fell just short of making the house/official cast for “The Ultimate Fighter 12.” In the interim, he was handed his only professional loss to date by Ivan Musardo, whom he challenged for the Cage Warriors lightweight title in 2011, before taking a three year hiatus from MMA, during which he went 7-0 as a pro boxer.

He returned to mixed martial arts this past Augusr and submitted Damien Lapilus at Cage Warriors 70 before knocking out Julien Boussuge three months later at Cage Warriors 74, which heralded his signing with the UFC.

During his four week-stint in Montreal, Duffy worked closely with head coach Firas Zahabi, as well as Eric O’Keefe – both of whom will corner him on Saturday at American Airlines Center – and was overwhelmed by the former’s martial-arts acumen.

“I worked a lot with Eric O’Keefe, but Firas has been overseeing every session,” he said. “Also, I had all the fighters. You’ve got a lot of UFC and top-level fighters, and I probably learned something off every one of them. I‘ve been very lucky, and it’s been a dream come true in terms of camps. Firas is very calm and composed and has wisdom beyond his years. How he has managed to cram that much martial arts experience into his lifetime is just incredible. He’s just a book of knowledge.”

After his bout with Lindsey, Duffy plans to sit down with his family and management to discuss the possibility of moving to Montreal on a fulltime basis, which means leaving London, where he trains out of the MMA Clinic.

Yet, he has no intention of looking past Lindsey, and he’s acutely aware that his opponent was undefeated before arriving in the UFC, which has hammered home the point that a considerable jump from the standard he is used to awaits him.

“The proof is in the pudding,” he said. “Jake was doing well before he got to the UFC, and then he dropped two fights on the bounce, but that’s just the level we’re up against. Anything can happen to anyone, especially in this division, so it’s up to us to work our asses off in the gym and hopefully it all comes together.”

After losing to 'a guy who sucks' in Lineker, Ian McCall wants a 'tool' from Alpha Male

Ian McCall was expected to be one of the cornerstones of the UFC’s flyweight division when it was launched in 2012. But while he’s been a regular on the scene, McCall has only had his hand raised in two of his six trips to the octagon.

McCall (13-5-1 MMA, 2-3-1 UFC) explained in a recent interview that he’s a “head case” and is taking steps to address the mental part of his game while still struggling to come to terms with hisUFC 183 loss to John Lineker (25-7 MMA, 6-2 UFC).

“I only watched the fight once,” McCall said. “I didn’t get my ass kicked as bad as I thought. I just drew a blank. I remember I was so on-point. I’ve never been more on-point physically. And I just sh-t the bed mentally. Like, I got there and I was just like… . And I don’t doubt myself. I’m just sitting back there like, ‘I’m f-cked. This sucks. I feel like sh-t.’ It is what it is. That’s a part of my game, being a head case, I guess – which I am. I’m working with Vinny Shoreman, Joe Schilling’s mental coach – mind coach, I guess. Whatever you call it. So, you know, they can fix that.

“I lost to a guy who sucks. Realistically, he sucks. He’s basic. And I lost to him. So, whatever. It’s MMA. You can still lose and still become champ later. It could be worse.”

At UFC 156 in 2013, McCall dropped a decision to Joseph Benavidez (21-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) of Team Alpha Male.

There’s a long simmering rivalry between McCall and the Team Alpha Male camp. This has McCall eying the camp – and Benavidez specifically – as his next opponent.

“I want to fight Joe Benavidez next,” McCall explained. “I’d like to. I need to beat up someone from Alpha Male, and he seems like a good candidate – and he’s ranked above me. I’ll fight anybody, you know me. I don’t care. To have all those douchebags kind of – like, I literally walked out to the cage and I turned to my left and I saw all those f-cking tools, shirts off, chest bumping, and I couldn’t help but laugh. It was a little distracting, I’m not going to lie. It was kind of funny.

“But I would love to just – OK, yeah, you beat me last time, you’re going to kick my ass again. Come on, let’s fight. I’m going to put him back to sleep again, like (Demetrious Johnson) did.”

If the situation between McCall and Team Alpha Male brings to mind images of high school cliques, McCall isn’t beyond basically admitting to a bit of an “outsider” vs. “frat guy” element to the feud.

“I’m not going to lie, I’m a douchebag too,” McCall said. “Let’s get this out there. But they just – this is going to sound even worse. I grew up fighting frat guys. That’s what we did in high school or college, just beat up frat dudes all the time. There was always kind of that rubbing on each other, I don’t like these guys that much. Words were said and I said something and back and forth. And, now I just – I don’t know. We like talking shit to each other. It’s kind of fun.”

MMAJunkie reports that Alexander Shlemenko is about to be suspended by the California State Athletic Commission after testing positive for an elevated testosterone-to-epitestosterone ratio. The site has confirmed with multiple sources that Shlemenko failed the test conducted after his win over Melvin Manhoef at Bellator 133 on February 13th.

A representative of Bellator has confirmed the test result and Scott Coker issued a statement which read, “We are disappointed to hear about the results of Shlemenko’s drug test. As I’ve stated previously, performance enhancing drugs have no place in this sport, and Bellator fully supports the commission in enforcing harsh penalties to deter fighters from taking banned substances.”
