nWoHulkster
North Korea Plans Pro-Wrestling EventNorth Korea plans to host an international pro-wrestling competition in its capital city of Pyongyang late in August, jointly organized by the Japanese wrestler-turned-politician who took part in a similar event in 1995.Pro-wrestlers from Japan, the U.S. and other countries will take part in the contest to be held “in the idea of independence, peace and friendship,” the North’s state news agency said Monday. The competition is jointly organized by Kanji Inoki, a politician and popular Japanese ex-professional wrestler, and the North’s International Martial Arts Games Committee Chairman Jang Ung.Mr. Inoki’s secretary confirmed the event, and said the organizers haven’t finalized on the list of the participating wrestlers. “They will be revealed once the event nears,” he said. The former Japanese wrestler, whose ring name was Antonio Inoki, is wildly popular in the hermit kingdom for being the protege of Rikidozan, a legendary sumo wrestler originally from North Korea, and seen as the founder of professional wrestling in Japan. This is not the first time Mr. Inoki, a frequent traveler to North Korea, has tried his hand at wrestling diplomacy. Back in 1995, he battled “Nature Boy” Ric Flair at a two-day “Wrestling for Peace” event in Pyongyang in front of an estimated total of 340,000 people. The wrestling match, dubbed “Collision in Korea,” was the first pay-per-view event from a North American wrestling promotion to be held in North Korea. It is unknown whether North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, who is a fan and friend of former U.S. basketball star Dennis Rodman, likes wrestling or not. But the planned pro-wrestling competition sits comfortably with Pyongyang’s recent emphasis on sports development.Mr. Rodman, the flamboyant retired athlete who made several trips to North Korea last year, said in September that he would serve as head coach of North Korea’s basketball team at the 2016 Olympic Games. Monteso
- Link to comment

nWoHulkster
