8. IWGP Intercontinental Title: Shinsuke Nakamura © beat Shelton Benjamin (12:07) with the Boma Ye (1st defense).

9. IWGP Heavyweight Title: Kazuchika Okada © beat Satoshi Kojima (24:44) with the Rainmaker (4th defense).

Kazuchika Okada remains the main man in New Japan Pro-Wrestling after overcoming the tricky challenge of Satoshi Kojima before a packed house in Kobe today. Okada made a successful V4 defense of his IWGP Heavyweight Title against Kojima, a man with a couple of recent pinfalls over the champion, meaning his reign looks to at least be over 6 months long. But after sinking Kojima with the Rainmaker, Okada didn’t have much time to celebrate before ace Hiroshi Tanahashi made his way to the ring. Tanahashi challenged his great rival to another match for the title on New Japan’s next big show at Sumo Hall (10/14), and the winner of this is likely to face Naito at the Tokyo Dome in January.

Shinsuke Nakamura made a successful V1 defense of his IWGP Intercontinental Title with his second reign really getting off and running. Nakamura’s last successful defense of his previous reign was against today’s challenger, Shelton Benjamin, but Benjamin has since beaten Shinsuke in the G1 Climax to earn another chance. He got his second chance but fell to the Boma Ye after 12 minutes. NOAH star Naomichi Marufuji, who recently teamed up with Shinsuke on a NOAH show, appeared afterwards and asked fans if they wanted to see the two meet for the IC Title. The fans would love to see it and responded as such, and Nakamura accepted the challenge from Marufuji!

Tetsuya Naito risked his 1/4/14 Tokyo Dome title shot against Masato Tanaka’s NEVER Openweight Title and it turned out to be a smart risk. Naito was the original poster boy of the NEVER Openweight Title Tournament before his injury, but when he was sidelined Tanaka won the tournament and has reigned since. Tanaka also defeated Naito in his V4 defense of the belt in July to rub salt in the wounds, but the Stardust Genius and 2013 G1 Climax winner got his revenge today, winning an exciting match with the Stardust press to win the first singles title of his career and take one step closer to headlining the Tokyo Dome next January for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. But his former tag partner turned hated rival, Yujiro Takahashi, could be an obstacle before then after challenging Naito to a shot at the title and his Tokyo Dome title shot tonight.

Before challenging Okada at the end of the show, New Japan ace Hiroshi Tanahashi avenged recent defeats to Bullet Club leader Prince Devitt in a Lumberjack Death Match. The stipulation limited Devitt’s options as he has relied heavily on assistance from Bullet Club members to win some big matches lately, although he still got help, just not enough this time. Tanahashi showed the difference in rank in a fairer match than previously, pinning Devitt with his High Fly Flow after 13 1/2 minutes.

One year after making their first New Japan in-ring appearance as a team, Laughter7 continued to appear and defeated the veteran duo of Yuji Nagata & Manabu Nakanishi today with Sakuraba pinning Nagata while working an arm submission. Nagata of course had put Saku out of action earlier this year and they scrapped after the match, meaning another singles match could be on the horizon.

Rob Conway made his third trip of the year into New Japan with another defense of his NWA World Heavyweight Title, this time against junior legend Jushin Thunder Liger. After previously beating Nakanishi and Kojima in defenses, Conway succeeded again but once more needed help to win before dropping Liger with his Ego Trip.
