Remus
New Japan’s Spring tradition since 2005, the New Japan Cup, returns this year for its seventh installment. All sixteen participants and combinations were announced today and the cast is largely expected with the additions of Satoshi Kojima, Masato Tanaka, and MVP as outsiders. Of course, no Tanahashi as the winner of the tournament will challenge him for the IWGP Heavyweight Title. Will Hirooki Goto repeat his 2009 and 2010 NJC victories and go on to face Tanahashi at Korakuen on April 3rd? New Japan Cup – Final: Yuji Nagata beat Shinsuke Nakamura (14:44) with a backdrop hold. * Yuji Nagata, the veteran who refuses to go away in this youth-led era, wins his second New Japan Cup and first since 2007! Nagata defeated Yano in one semi while Nakamura bested Makabe in the other. Then in a heated final, Nagata defeated the CHAOS leader with a backdrop hold. * This sets up Tanahashi’s V2 defense of the IWGP Heavyweight Title for 4/3 Korakuen against Nagata. * Speaking of Tanahashi, he was unexpectedly pinned by MVP in a special tag match while teaming with Goto against Kojima & MVP. But the ace of New Japan didn’t lose under normal circumstances as Goto betrayed him and walked out, leaving him to fend for himself against two tough wrestlers. Goto, on the heels of this dastardly act, now intends to head to Mexico indefinitely. * Prince Devitt continues to rule the junior division with an iron fist, as one day after successfully defending his IWGP Jr. Heavyweight Title against KUSHIDA, he and Taguchi downed TAKA & Taichi in their V2 defense of the IWGP Jr. Tag Team Title when Devitt pinned Taichi.
