New Japan welcomes “Strong Man”, a beastly assassin from CMLL who will be immediately thrust into the limelight when he faces Tanahashi in the first round of the New Japan Cup. At 6′0″ and 302lbs, he is a major powerhouse and will be better known to Japanese fans (or at least the few who watch IGF) as Jon Andersen from Antonio Inoki’s IGF promotion. Nowadays he is working in CMLL and heads to New Japan for his first tour, also forming a team with Nakanishi throughout it.

The New Japan Cup began its fifth anniversary installment today with a show not short of surprises. MVP Hiroshi Tanahashi faced CMLL assassin Strong Man who showed off an incredibly muscular body and used his power to dominate Tanahashi, forcing the High Flying Star to use skill and cunning to win, a small package hold taking him through to the second round. Masato Tanaka and Manabu Nakanishi met in a hard-hitting match that saw the ZERO1 ace continue his good form of late in his long New Japan stay, following up on his victory over Hirooki Goto at Sumo Hall by pinning Nakanishi. Togi Makabe, who wrestled earlier in the day at the same building for DDT (see below), expectedly beat Tomohiro Ishii to advance.

Further down the card were the big upsets, one of the biggest of which saw Yujiro Takahashi defeat Nagata for the biggest win of his career. Yujiro acted "impudent" in the match, a young punk, and pinned Nagata with a moonsault press, also clobbering him with his IWGP Tag Team Title belt to force Mr. Saikyo out on a stretcher. Wataru Inoue was pummeled by Giant Bernard and was en route to a predictable loss before catching the big man with a momentary crucifix hold for the flash win! The other half of NO LIMIT, Tetsuya Naito, also scored a big win, pinning Karl Anderson with his spectacular moonsault press, while to the surprise of no one Toru Yano beat Tomoaki Honma not for the first time in the past year.

NO LIMIT further left their mark on the New Japan Cup today, the IWGP Tag Team Champions taking it to members of the "4 Heroes" in front of 9,000 fans in Aichi. Tetsuya Naito scored by far the biggest win of his career in the main event, pinning Tanahashi. Tanahashi went into the match with an injured knee but Naito didn't specifically target only it, and while Tana wasn't 100%, he was beaten cleanly by the IWGP Tag Team Champion. Naito had to use his spectacular Stardust press to send New Japan's ace out of the tournament. Naito's tag partner, Yujiro Takahashi, wasn't able to advance after falling just short against reigning tournament winning Hirooki Goto. It was another close match but Goto pulled through with his Shouten. Makabe defeated rival Yano and Tanaka expectedly bested Wataru Inoue in the other second round match, setting up semi finals of Makabe vs. Naito and Goto vs. Tanaka, the latter their fourth match in recent months and showing the feud didn't die after all with Goto's loss at Sumo Hall in February.

The ring name of dojo boy Fale Simitaitoko has been announced as King Fale. The much hyped Tongan will debut on the big 4/4 Korakuen show in a high profile first match against Nakanishi.

Hirooki Goto's second New Japan Cup trophy in a row brought to an end several months of misery for him and made him the number one contender for Shinsuke Nakamura's IWGP Heavyweight Title. Goto's career had been going backwards in recent months but his "never say die" attitude brought him back up several rungs today. His series with ZERO1 ace Masato Tanaka seemed to be over when Tanaka beat him at the recent Sumo Hall show but Goto was given a chance to change that today, and he did, pinning Tanaka in one of the semi finals. The other one saw NO LIMIT's impressive NJC final end as Tetsuya Naito couldn't follow up on his victory over Tanahashi. He almost did defeat Makabe but a missed Stardust press was the turning point, Makabe finishing him off shortly after.

This set up the final of Goto vs. Makabe, a repeat of the 2008 G1 Climax, and the result was the said, Goto's Shouten ending a grueling struggle and setting up Nakamura vs. Goto for 4/4 Korakuen. Goto said he had "seen Hell" and is ready to win the IWGP Heavyweight Title for the first time. Nakamura, who confronted his former RISE second-in-command, has other ideas though and will look to make a successful V6 defense in two weeks time.
